The Health of Georgia's Children

Recently, Georgia received the distinction of having the 3rd highest obesity prevalence rates among children 6-19 years. With 62% of adults and 33% of children overweight and obesity in the state, it is clear that actions must be taken in both the state legislative arena and the grass roots level. Data from health systems suggest that obese 6 year olds may already be suffering from 2 cardiovascular disease risk factors due to their excess weight. What can parent do today? Many small changes! The good news is that parents have the ability to bring their children into "energy balance" with some very simple changes in food, activity and screen time. For an adult to lose weight, he/she would have to cut approximately 500 calories a day to lose 1 pound each week. For a child to achieve healthy weight, they may cut as little as 100 calories per day and continue to grow in height which will allow them to reach a goal weight that is appropriate for their gender and height. Ideas for small changes are forthcoming! Stay tuned for practical tips to get Georgia's children --- our children -- healthier.
